Food handling is a complex chain of processes with the potential to involve dozens of touchpoints and associated hazards. Having robust food safety systems in place, verified by a globally recognised certification body, is critical to not only ensuring food safety but demonstrating your organisation’s dedication to safe, responsible and sustainable food production.
Food safety certification indicates that your business is compliant with the food safety standards that ensure you protect your brand reputation as well as your consumers.
By identifying hazards in food handling procedures and reducing the associated risks, you will provide your staff with a safer working environment. In addition, food safety certification provides a framework for effective communication systems and continuous monitoring procedures.
At each stage of the food handling process, there are potential hazards. With biological, chemical and physical hazards ever-present from production to processing, packaging and distribution with so many touchpoints there are dozens of opportunities for hazards to impact the quality and safety of your food products.
Food safety certification is a third-party assessment of your food handling methods and procedures. The certification is awarded if your business is compliant with Australian standards and regulations.
QMS provides assessment and certification services that will help you achieve HACCP and ISO 22000.
HACCP is a hazard assessment tool, used to identify and prevent hazards in the production process. It is a practical method of biological, chemical and physical hazard prevention across all phases of the food handling chain.Learn more about HACCP Certification
ISO 22000 is an international standard and food management safety system that covers every element of the food production and distribution process from food producers through to organisations participating in the food supply chain.Learn more about ISO 22000 certification
At every stage of the food production process, it’s vital to ensure the safety of the final product. Our management systems certification process involves a simple eight-step process consisting of the following components:
At this stage, our team will determine which factors are important to your certification. We’ll then perform a review of your application and calculate the duration and frequency of your assessment.
You’ll receive a complete, transparent, fixed price proposal with no hidden fees.
Optional gap analysis
If you’re not sure whether you’re ready to apply for certification our team can perform a gap analysis against the basic requirements for the standard or standards you wish to be certified for. This process will either confirm that you are ready for certification or identify areas that need improvement prior to certification.
Initial Stage 1 Assessment
At this stage, your management system and related documents, site-specific requirements and stage 2 compliance assessment readiness will be reviewed by one of our assessors.
Initial Stage 2 assessment
Here we’ll evaluate the implementation and effectiveness of your management system, covering each of the standard’s requirements. We’ll then give you a comprehensive conformance and non-conformance report. If there are no major non-conformance issues your assessor will recommend your organisation for certification.
We will then undertake a formal technical review of stage 1 and 2 assessment documents and make a formal certification decision.
We’ll conduct ongoing surveillance assessments over the following two years to ensure the ongoing implementation and maintenance of your management system.
Three years after you’ve been granted certification it’s time to recertify. Recertification involves a process similar to the stage 2 assessment whereby we’ll review your ongoing compliance to the standard or standards. You’ll receive a report from your assessor and either continue your certification or be required to rectify any non-conformance issues.
Expanding or reducing the scope of your certification
At any stage, you may request a change to your scope of certification. This may be in response to things like changes in your organisation’s activities, the addition of new locations or the acquisition of another business.

HACCP is a food safety system while ISO 22000 is a food safety management system standard. Essentially, HACCP is intended to monitor potential food safety hazards and can either be used in isolation or in tandem with other systems and regulations, such as ISO 22000. HACCP prevents food safety hazards from occurring.
ISO 22000 meanwhile is the international standard for food safety management systems with a much broader and more all-encompassing focus based on quality principles. It incorporates HACCP principles and builds off them to create a broad management system framework which allows for continual improvements to manufacturing and food safety processes.
