Solid Growth for Certifications for 2009 Reported
JAS-ANZ recently reported encouraging numbers across all certification programsfor the calendar 2009 year. The year saw the following statistics for issued certificates:
Quality ISO9001 - increase of 3% (+1,159 certificates)
Environmental ISO14001 - increase of 12% (+770 certificates)
Overall certificates - increase of 6% (+3,557 certificates)
It is great to see that the Global Financial Crisis has not given good proactive companies any excuses to steer away from certification activities, and instead are continuing to see the benefits that formal management systems and solid third-party certification can provide.

What Are the Drivers for ISO 9000 and ISO 14000?
JAS-ANZ and Monash University have agreed to undertake a research project that will examine the drivers to ISO 9000 (quality) and ISO 14000 (environmental) certification.
The research will be led by Professor Amrik Sohal and Dr Daniel Prajogo of Monash University’s Australian Supply Chain Management Research Unit.
It will focus on Australian and New Zealand organisations that are certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, and will seek to answer questions such as:
* What are the forces that impact on the initial adoption and maintenance of international systems such as ISO 9000 and ISO 14000?
* What is the role of key stakeholders in driving the adoption of these standards?
* How well are these systems/ standards aligned with business goals/ strategies?
* What practices are employed by organisations to maintain the standards and audit processes?
* What has been the level of operational and strategic benefits achieved from the adoption of these international standards/ systems?
* What challenges are being anticipated in the future and how might the international standards assist organisations to meet these challenges?
* Has adoption of ISO 9000 and ISO 14000 led them to consider gaining certification to other standards, for instance ISO 14064.1 (Greenhouse Gas), ISO 22000 (Food Safety), ISO 27001 (Information Security).
* Do these Certified Organisations:
- Require the organisations that they purchase products and services from to also be certified to ISO 9001? - Consider that the performance of their suppliers (i) has improved since the supplier(s) obtained ISO 9001 certification; and (ii) continues to improve on an ongoing basis?
The results will assist Certification Bodies, certification auditors and JAS-ANZ to better understand the drivers for certification.
The final report will be published in mid 2010.
JAS-ANZ and Monash University collaborated on a study titled “The Implementation of ISO 9000 in Australian Organisations”, published in 2006. Download this report (1.2 MB PDF).
ISO 27001 Standard Keeps Information Systems Security in Check
Information Security Management System (ISMS) standard ISO 27001 specifies the requirements and processes that enable an organisation to establish, manage and maintain an effective information management system using a continual improvement approach.
ISO 27001 covers all types of organisations including commercial enterprises, government agencies and not-for profit organisations. The standard is designed to ensure the selection of adequate and proportionate security controls that protect information assets and give confidence to interested parties.
One of the main benefits of having ISO 27001 certification is the assurance that effective information security controls are in place to minimise the risk of a potential security incident.
